Common Misconceptions About Eating Disorders
As both a clinician and someone with lived experience, I can tell you—eating disorders are deeply misunderstood. One of the biggest myths? That recovery is as simple as “just eating.” The truth is, eating disorders are not only about food. Just because I eat dinner, smile at work, or appear “fine” on the outside doesn’t mean I’m recovered.
Recovery is messy, non-linear, and goes far beyond what’s on the plate. It’s emotional, psychological, and often invisible. Please, don’t mistake behaviour for healing!
You can't “just eat” when you have an eating disorder.
Weight restoration doesn’t mean full recovery.
You can have an eating disorder at any size.
It’s not about vanity – it’s about control, coping, and deep pain.
“Healthy eating” can become disordered too.
Support isn’t just about food – it's about how someone feels in their body.
Talk with someone that truly understands.
