Why is Helen essential in Eating Disorder treatment?

I am an Eating Disorder Recovery Clinician with a background of over 25 years spanning nutrition, mental health, and counselling.

I work with adolescents and young adults experiencing eating disorders, providing recovery-focused care that addresses both the physical and psychological patterns that keep eating disorders in place.

I am an Accredited Practising Dietitian, a Mental Health Clinician, and a Registered Counsellor. This integrated training allows me to work directly with eating disorder behaviours, food-related fear, rigidity, and avoidance, while also supporting emotional regulation, motivation, and the therapeutic process of change.

My work is grounded in structure, consistency, and containment.

I support recovery as it unfolds in real life — through eating, behaviour change, family support, and ongoing therapeutic guidance — rather than separating nutrition from mental health care.

I work alongside psychologists, GPs, and paediatricians, but my role is not limited to a single part of treatment. I remain actively involved throughout recovery, helping young people and families move forward in a steady, supported way.

My Role in Eating Disorder Treatment

I work directly with the eating disorder, guiding recovery in day-to-day life. Areas of expertise:

  • “I work therapeutically with eating behaviours, food avoidance, fear foods, rigidity and ED recovery — alongside nutrition adequacy.”

  • “I provide behavioural and exposure-based food support (particularly in EDs, ARFID, ADHD and neurodivergence).”

  • "I support healthy eating patterns and nutrition as part of recovery"

  • "I help young people practice new behaviours and cope with anxiety around food"

  • "I work closely with families to create structure, reduce conflict, and support change"

I remain actively involved throughout recovery, supporting both behavioural change and emotional wellbeing, often alongside other clinicians when needed.

Who I Work With

I work with adolescents, young adults, and families who are living with the day‑to‑day reality of an eating disorder.

People often come to me when:

  • Eating feels frightening, overwhelming, or tightly controlled

  • There are rigid rules, rituals, avoidance, or negotiation around food

  • Weight, growth, or medical stability is a concern

  • Progress feels stuck, circular, or fragile

  • Parents are unsure how to support eating without escalating distress

This work often sits in the active recovery phase — where the eating disorder is loud, change is uncomfortable, and consistent support is needed.

How I Work

My approach is:

  • Recovery-focused – prioritising health, safety, and forward movement

  • Calm and structured – reducing overwhelm for both the young person and their family

  • Collaborative – working alongside psychologists, GPs, and paediatricians

  • Individualised – meeting each person where they are, without rushing or minimising

We focus on small, consistent steps that support recovery — even when motivation is low.

Family involvement is central to my work. I guide parents and carers in supporting recovery at home, helping translate therapy into everyday practice and reduce the stress and conflict that eating disorders often create. I use evidence-based therapies tailored to your needs, including:

  • Family therapy

  • Individual therapy

  • Motivational interviewing

  • DBT for eating disorders

  • Adolescent-parent therapy

  • Emotion-focused therapy

  • Schema therapy

For 2026, I continue to offer both individual therapy and structured support groups, providing safe spaces where young people and families can be heard, supported, and empowered. My goal is to deliver personalised care that helps you make meaningful, lasting change while navigating recovery with confidence.
