Why is Helen essential in Eating Disorder treatment?

I am an Accredited Practising Dietitian, Mental Health Clinician, and Registered Counsellor with over 25 years of experience supporting individuals and families impacted by eating disorders.

As an Eating Disorder Recovery Clinician, my work integrates nutrition therapy with counselling to address both the physical and psychological processes that keep eating disorders in place.

I provide structured, recovery-focused care that supports meaningful change in everyday life — through eating, behaviour change, emotional support, and family involvement — rather than separating nutrition from mental health treatment.

My work is grounded in structure, consistency, and clinical containment. Many of the individuals I support require a thoughtful, integrated approach when eating has become distressing, entrenched, or difficult to shift.

I work collaboratively with psychologists, GPs, and paediatricians, remaining actively involved throughout recovery to help individuals and families move forward in a steady, supported way.

A Fully Integrated Treatment Approach

I work directly with the eating disorder — guiding recovery where it matters most: in day-to-day life.

Areas of Clinical Focus:

  • Therapeutic support for eating behaviours, avoidance, rigidity, and fear foods

  • Behavioural and exposure-based food work, particularly in eating disorders and ARFID

  • Nutrition adequacy within the recovery process

  • Anxiety-informed behaviour change

  • Family guidance that reduces conflict and supports progress

Who I Work With

I support children, adolescents, young adults, and families living with the day-to-day reality of an eating disorder.

Families and individuals often seek my support when:

  • Eating feels frightening, overwhelming, or tightly controlled

  • Rigid rules, rituals, or food avoidance are present

  • Weight, growth, or medical stability is a concern

  • Progress feels stuck, circular, or fragile

  • Parents feel unsure how to support eating without escalating distress

This work often sits within the active recovery phase — when the eating disorder is loud, change is uncomfortable, and consistent clinical support is essential.

My Clinical Approach

My work is:

  1. Recovery-focused — prioritising health, safety, and forward movement

  2. Calm and structured — reducing overwhelm for both the young person and their family

  3. Collaborative — working alongside treating professionals to provide integrated care

  4. Individualised — meeting each person where they are while maintaining therapeutic direction

We focus on small, consistent steps that support recovery — because lasting change rarely happens through urgency, but through steadiness.

Neurodivergence & Eating Disorders

I have a particular interest in supporting neurodivergent individuals, including those with Autism and ADHD.

Eating differences within neurodivergent populations are often misunderstood. Sensory processing, predictability needs, anxiety, interoception differences, and cognitive style can significantly shape a person’s relationship with food.
