What often starts as "wanting to be healthy", has become an obsession. It is now ingrained in your daily routine. Trying to stop seems impossible- how would I even start I hear you say!
Here are some steps that may help you transition away from calorie counting:
Recognise the Negative Impact: Reflect on how calorie counting is affecting your mental and emotional well-being. Consider whether it's causing stress, anxiety, guilt around eating, or impacting your enjoyment of food and social interactions.
Understand Your Triggers: Identify what triggers your urge to count calories. It could be certain situations, emotions, or thoughts related to body image or weight.
Educate Yourself: Learn about intuitive eating and the principles of mindful eating. These approaches focus on listening to your body's hunger and fullness cues rather than relying on external rules like calorie counts.
Gradual Reduction: If you've been meticulously tracking calories, consider gradually reducing the frequency or intensity of tracking. Start by skipping counting for one meal or one day, and gradually extend this period.
Focus on Nutrient Density: Shift your focus from calorie numbers to the nutrient quality of foods. Aim to choose foods that are nourishing and provide a variety of nutrients your body needs.
Challenge Distorted Thoughts: If negative thoughts about food, weight, or body image arise, challenge them with more balanced and realistic perspectives. Consider how your body feels rather than solely focusing on external appearance.
Set Positive Goals: Instead of focusing on weight or calorie numbers, set goals related to improving your overall health and well-being- practice activities that bring you joy!
Be Patient and Kind to Yourself: Breaking habits takes time and effort. Be patient with yourself during this process and celebrate small victories along the way.
Remind yourself that you are more than a number, food should never be earned, you deserve to be free!
